Recently, I had something of an epiphany. A sentence has stayed with me since, almost like a mantra: “Es buena madera, no fue ni será nunca perfecta. Ya en ti lo que hagas con ella.” (It is good wood. It is not and will never be perfect. What you do with it is up to you.) There comes a point when, as an artist, you have to let a work be. That moment can be unsettling. You cannot know whether others will connect with it in the way you hope they will. This uncertainty can be difficult to sit with. But there is also a sense of release in accepting that, no matter how you feel about a piece, its meaning no longer belongs entirely to you. It is up to others to decide what to make of it. Whether they embrace it or not matters less than your own conviction in having made it. In that sense, your work is “good wood.” What happens to it after it leaves your hands is no longer yours to control.
