Why Study with Me

I teach theory, improvisation, and performance through a clear, step-by-step approach that stays practical and musical. Lessons are structured, focused, and built to develop real understanding rather than shortcuts or vague concepts.

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Arts in Music Composition from Tufts University. I specialize in pre-college preparation and work primarily with intermediate to advanced students, including college-bound high school musicians, composition students, and performers seeking stronger theoretical and improvisational foundations.

In lessons, we work with concrete material: repertoire analysis, applied harmony and voice leading, ear training connected directly to real music, improvisation frameworks, and targeted exercises designed around each student’s goals. Fundamentals always come first, but they are quickly connected to music the student is playing, writing, or preparing.

My goal is to help students become musically independent. Expect direct feedback, specific practice strategies, and a clear sense of direction from week to week. These lessons are best suited for students who are motivated, curious, and ready to engage seriously with the material. Students are expected to practice and reflect between sessions so the work continues beyond the lesson itself.

Testimonials

I started lessons because I needed to prepare for the college music entrance exams and focus on studying harmony, ear training, general theory, and musical analysis. The lessons were weekly and structured around theory and practice, along with tools to study independently and improve for the next session. Over time, I developed a stronger ear that helps me when transcribing, and a solid level of harmony that I still use today in school.

I came to lessons wanting a more structured way to understand theory and apply it to my playing. Carlos’s approach was clear and methodical, and every session had a defined focus. The material was always connected to real music, which made the work feel relevant rather than abstract. Over time, I developed better practice habits and greater independence as a musician. The lessons were challenging but consistently productive.
