Mauro's music draws inspiration from a range of sources: the precise nuances of Microtonality, the otherworldly depths of Spectralism, the subtleties of Timbre Driven Music, the heartwarming strains of Peruvian Folk Music, the unpredictability of Free Improvisation, and the profound depths of Philosophy. His compositions have been brought to life and immortalized in recordings by top-tier ensembles and soloists such as Concept Store Quartet, SoundIcon Ensemble, PUBLIquartet, Splice Ensemble, and renowned artists like Lilit Hartunian, Barret Ham, and Issei Herr.
In his relentless pursuit of knowledge, Carlos has had the privilege of studying composition under the expert guidance of esteemed mentors including Alla Elana Cohen, Andrew List, Yoon-Ji Lee, and Tamar Diesendruck. Further, he has engaged in insightful discussions and shared his musical perspectives at masterclasses with notable composers such as Tania Leon, Julia Wolfe, Richard Carrick, Emily Koh, Trevor Weston, among others. Broadening the scope of his skillset, Carlos studied conducting with Francisco Noya, and honed his classical guitar performance skills under the guidance of Berta Rojas, a world-renowned classical guitarist and recipient of two Latin Grammy awards.
As a theorist, Carlos harbors a keen interest in musical form and its implications on musical material within the context of concert music. He has penned numerous essays on this topic and is currently delving into the intriguing intersections between music theory and human communication.
Born in Lima, Peru in 1998, Carlos was introduced to the world of music in 2011, taking on the role of bass drummer in his high-school band under the direction of José Kodama Zuñiga. Concurrently, he began his journey into music theory and instrumental performance, developing a broad, reliable understanding of diverse instruments such as Guitar, Bass, Piano, Euphonium, Trumpet, Cello, Quena, and Zampoña. His final years at high school saw him joining the Jazz Band, further expanding his musical horizons.
Following high school, Carlos began formalizing his musical knowledge at a local university in Lima, forging connections within Peru's vibrant musician community. Eventually, his path led him to the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, United States, where he obtained his Bachelors Degree in Music as a Composition Major with a Conducting Minor in 2021.
In the next phase of his academic journey, Carlos will commence his graduate studies at Tufts University. There, he aims to delve into the captivating overlap of music composition, psychology, and cognitive sciences under the mentorship of acclaimed composers John McDonald and Kareem Roustom.
